Simply Fall

Please enjoy our fall photos. You will see that Cooper likes to give hugs. We can get him to sit still for a picture when we tell him to give Carter hugs. It makes for some cute pictures. The big news at our house is Carter is walking without encouragement. Just like every new skill that Carter has learned - he waited to do it until he was good at it. He is stable and gets around like he has been walking for months.

One Big Update

After spending the day on the computer at work, my enthusiasm for more in the evenings and weekends is low. The boys are so much fun to play with that the computer work gets put on the back burner. Additionally, remodeling the house consumed most of our free time for several weeks. Here are the highlights from August through October.

August: Most of August was spent working on the upstairs remodel, while living downstairs. A contractor took the wall down between the kitchen and living room, scrapped the popcorn acoustics from the ceiling, and retextured the ceiling. Curt and I painted the trim throughout the upstairs and the walls. Removing the popcorn ceilings left a terrible mess of white powder everywhere, so when the boys were upstairs they were confined to their highchairs, which is not fun for 10 month olds! Much of the work had to been done once the boys were in bed. While living downstairs we ate most meals on the picnic table on the deck. We enjoyed being outside for lunch and supper and usually ate breakfast downstairs. The boys ate from their Bumbos. Artie especially enjoyed this part as he found lots of leftovers on the carpet while Carter & Cooper learned to eat solid “big boy” food.

On August 23, the boys were baptized at the United Methodist Church. We were blessed to have our families attend this special event. We enjoyed lunch with the family and friends at a restaurant, since the kitchen table and chairs were in the garage and the kitchen counters covered in white powder and painting supplies.

At the end of August we took a trip to Idaho. I did an inventory observation for one of the audit clients that I supervise and Curt visited two of his clients that were in the area. The laminate flooring was being laid in the kitchen and living room when we left on our trip. Returning to a home without plastic on the floor was exciting.

We stayed home over the Labor Day weekend to finish painting our bedroom, nail up the trim and move in the furniture for the kitchen and living room. What a relief to get life part way back to “normal”. Finally, the carpet was laid in the bedrooms and we were able to move back upstairs. The boys shared a crib while we were downstairs and were happy to have their own space back for sleeping.

September: We went to the Cox ranch to help pregnancy check the cows for one weekend during the month. The following weekend we went to Denver for a continuing education class for my work. We arrived in Denver a day early to catch up with our friends from our stay last fall. We met up with our favorite nurse practitioner from our stay in the hospital. She was the nurse that kindly baked a carrot cake for us to help us celebrate the 34 week mark of gestation and our release to the Ronald McDonald House. Additionally while in Denver, we prepared a dinner for the guests at the Ronald McDonald House (RMH). During our stay at the RMH, the meals from volunteers were what we enjoyed most about the House and vowed that we would return the favor. We also stopped by the hospital to drop off some knitting supplies that were donated by my co-workers for the Healing Art’s Program at PSL. Butterflies filled our stomachs the second we pulled into the hospital parking garage. An uneasy sense came over Curt and me while walking the halls of the hospital. We couldn’t get out of the hospital fast enough. Our friends, Jack and BeaAnn treated us like royalty during our stay. We went to supper with them at our favorite Greek restaurant and enjoyed supper at their house one evening. Curt and the boys hung out at the motel and around Denver while I attended classes during the day.

October: We celebrated Carter and Cooper’s first birthday with friends and family and had such a memorable day. It was one of the best days of my life. The boys had so much fun and found everything so exciting. It warmed my heart. We enjoyed lunch with our family and then invited friends over to celebrate the boys’ birthday, Curt’s birthday, and the completed house remodel.

We just returned from a trip to the NILE and stopped by the Hamilton Ranch for the weekend. Carter and Cooper spent some time with their new cousin Aspyn.

PHEW - it’s now apparent why the blog’s last update was in July. We’ve had a blast and enjoyed each of these adventures – (well maybe not all of the house project - that one was exhausting.) Carter and Cooper have been little troopers through all of this. They are amazingly patient with all of our activities. We continue to be so blessed!

Carter and Cooper
During these months the boys were busy too. Carter spent our time downstairs learning to crawl on all fours. Once he figured it out, he really took off. One of the boys’ favorite activities was to crawl up the stairs. Now they have even mastered coming down the stairs.

About a month ago Curt renamed the boys Katrina and Ike. The scatter the boys can get on things is remarkable. Their favorite places to play are the kitchen drawer with spatulas and other kitchen utensils, the drawer with dish towels and under the bathroom sink. It’s not uncommon to find a serving spoon in our bed, my make up on their high chair, or toys in the bathtub. Nothing is safe from a toilet with the lid open. So far my car keys and a pacifier are the only items to take a swim.

Carter took his first steps on his birthday. He prefers to crawl, but can walk with some encouragement. He gets the biggest grin on his face when he does walk. Walking was too slow paced for Cooper. He now runs most places that he goes and we can’t stop the kid from climbing. Curt went to change Carter’s diaper one day and came out to find Cooper dancing on top of the kitchen table. Both boys like to dance to the music. Cooper now says a few words. All animals and many other objects are Artie.

Here are some pictures. Be sure to "turn" the pages and you can click on any small pictures to see them larger. I'll put more pictures on at a later date of the house.

Day 1

In our parenting books we read from cover to cover while resting in Denver, we learned that when the twins are nine months old, to tackle another major project. We decided to remodel the house. OK, not really, but that sounds better than we decided on our own to do this. A few months back we agreed that once the boys stopped spitting up we would replace the carpet. This project kept growing and we eventually decided to take out the wall between the kitchen and livingroom, lay laminate flooring in the kitchen, livingroom and down the hall, remove the popcorn ceiling and get new carpet for the bedrooms. We contacted a contractor to get an estimate. We made the decision to go ahead with the project last week. On Friday the contractor, Ron, left us a message to call him on Monday to work out the details. We figured we would start some time next month. Well . . .Ron said to Curt on Monday morning, "if you are ready we can start on Tuesday." Monday was my day off. I had planned to hang out with the boys and just be lazy most of the day. They woke up about 7 am, had a bottle and then went back to sleep in bed with me. Curt awoke me to tell me the news. From there we rushed around all day to get all of the furniture moved to the garage and the essentials moved downstairs.

First Steps

Cooper took his first steps on Thursday. Every day he gets more sturdy and brave about letting go of the furniture.

We enjoyed an evening on the deck a few nights back. Curt starting picking out the dead flowers from the flower barrels. Cooper found it to be so funny. He giggled for at least 10 minutes.

Here's some pictures for you to enjoy.

We're on the Move

Carter and Cooper are on the move. Carter learned to crawl over the 4th of July weekend. He prefers an Army crawl over the traditional crawling method, but it effectively gets him around. He has found that this tractor is the most efficient way for him to move about.

Carter's Army Crawl:

Cooper is days away from walking. He took a couple of steps today without any support. Here he is using a toy to aid him.

Cooper's Big Month

Our premature baby that once barely tipped the scales over 4 1/2 pounds is thriving. May was an exciting month for Cooper. He learned to sit steadily, crawl, clap, stand up, and say "da-da" and "ma-ma". He also had five teeth come in. He is so delightful and so much happier than he was when he was little, cold and always hungry! The new teeth hardly affected him. A couple of doses of Motrin were all that he needed. He's one tough little boy. With his activity have come many crashes. Very few of them have caused tears.

Carter is taking life at a more leisurely pace. He enjoys sitting and playing with toys. His favorite toys are John Deere tractors and lotion bottles. One of Carter's favorite projects during the past month was helping plant the garden. He really enjoyed playing in the freshly tilled soil and even gave it a little taste test. He may have a future as a farmer. Carter spends much of his day watching Cooper and attempting to stay out of his way. Cooper likes to use him to stand up and frequently pulls Carter's hair. One day Carter had enough of his brother using him as a jungle gym; he grabbed him and threw him to the floor. The first of what are sure to be many minor disagreements!

The boys certainly enjoy each other and playing together. Last week we sat down to have a rare uninterrupted lunch while the boys played in their room with the John Deere tractors. They also spend many hours playing together with the lotion bottle. It's so adorable to watch them interact.

April Update

April was a busy month. It began with Cooper having a slight case of the Croup, which meant I stayed home from work for a couple of days. The first week of April was Curt's busiest week all spring with bull sales. In order for us to both keep up with our work, I would work early in the morning from home before Curt had to leave and then as soon as he returned I'd head to the office. The nice thing about tax season is that 8 pm at the office is just the same as 10 am!

We switched babysitters after Easter. We love our new sitter, Leslie. She has three girls of her own. They are 3, 5, and 8 years old. The girls are crazy about the boys. The oldest girl just loves to help with the boys. She can't wait for school to be out so that she can be with them all day.

We went to Hyattville for Easter. The boys enjoyed being outside and seeing the lambs and of course the grandparents. We laughed when Curt and I were feeding the bum lambs a bottle. The boys saw what was going on and were sure that we were giving their milk away to the lambs. They started crying and were very upset with us.

This month has been a big month in development for Carter and Cooper. They both roll over proficiently now and can sit up on their own. They also hold their own bottles. Being more mobile and independent has made for some really happy babies.

Four Months

The boys are now four months old. They grow and grow and grow. They both weigh about 15 pounds - making Cooper three times his birth weight. We discovered on Saturday that Cooper is now taller than his brother.

It amazes us how quickly they grow and learn new skills. They are grasping toys and can hold their bottles if the bottle isn't too full. Carter fed himself last week when Curt was home with them. If they are awake they are constantly moving, especially Cooper; he never sits still. Carter loves to smile and talk. Here's a video of them this morning (they get shy when we get the camera out - so they aren't as active and smiley as they can be).

Stock Show 2009

We spent a day at the Stock Show in Denver. The boys really enjoyed all of the new noises, lights and smells. Both boys started the day with the cute outfits from Great-Grandma Yeager that you will see Cooper wearing. Carter's outfit didn't make the whole day. We had found a nice quiet place to feed the boys lunch. I was ready to change Carter's diaper when I turned him over and it was too late. It was the biggest mess we have ever had. Sitting on the bleachers watching a heifer show is not the most convenient place for the major mess that we experienced. Fortunately there was an extra outfit in the diaper bag and lots of wipes!

Our friend, BeaAnn, joined us for a couple of hours. She is a college friend of my Mom's that treated us all very well during our previous eight weeks in Denver.

Time flies when you are raising twins

Carter and Cooper are three months old today. The boys keep us busy. We spend a lot of time keeping them fed. The constant feeding has paid off as they have each doubled their size since they were born. Carter is weighing about 12 pounds and Cooper is about 11 pounds. The boys just went through a growth spurt. We finally have them filled up the last few days.

Carter and Cooper each smile and coo now. I saw a quote, “There is nothing like a child’s smile to make all the chaos worthwhile.” How true that is. Carter started sleeping through the night about a month ago. Cooper will sleep through most nights, but needs a reminder about 3 am each night that it’s not time to wake up. Luckily, the pacifier will get him back to sleep until 5 or 6.

Starting December 1st, I started working about 20 hours a week from home. Curt also continues to work from home. A friend will start watching the boys a couple of days a week in January, so that Curt and I can be more efficient about our work! Curt gets very busy with bull sales and I will return to the office for 30 hours a week in February. We’ve sure enjoyed being able to be home with them this long.

Both boys are anxious to do something more than lay around. These pictures are of the boys in their chairs, called Bumbo's, watching football. We laughed at Carter as he "talked" about the game while watching it.
